Founded in 1926, the club from Naples will forever be associated with one man – Diego Maradona. Prior to the Argentinian superstar’s surprise arrival in 1984, Napoli’s only major honours were two Coppas Italia. With Maradona leading the team, Napoli won their first Serie A title in 1986-87 as part of a double, and they followed that with a UEFA Cup in 1998-89 and a second championship the next year. The success Maradona brought to Southern Italy elevated him to near-Godlike status amongst the Napoli faithful. Other great players from that era included Careca, Alemao, and Gianfranco Zola. Napoli declined post-Maradona, but the team from the Stadio San Paolo have enjoyed a resurgence in recent years, winning three Coppas Italia in the last decade. Here at New Vintage Football we have re-created some of Napoli’s most famous shirts from 1980-2011, including three from the Maradona era.
